African Hand Drums | Djembe Drums | Instruments

Music, either making it or listening to it, is typically linked to life experiences in African culture. These experiences range from special occasions such as births, weddings and funerals, to the accompaniment of everyday experiences, such as playing games, learning about the environment or discussing politics and economics. Music is an expression of the living, and using music traditions links the living to those who came before and to those who will arrive in the future. Music is fun and makes people want to move, thereby drawing them into the presence of being alive. Of all the African drums, the djembe drum is very sought after and considered to be the most popular African musical instrument. The Djembe is the drum of the Mandinka people, and its origins dates back to the great Mali Empire of the 12th century. African goatskins from Mali are the most suitable for covering the playing surface of a djembe, due to central Africa having the perfect climatic and grazing conditions for the goats. The skins therefore undoubtedly, provide the very best sound. Traditional folk instruments like the kora can take several weeks or more to build. Even after the instrument is constructed, the artisan works the instrument to maturity making many small adjustments over a period of weeks. In the case of the kora, the cow skin over the calabash, the strings, and the leather tuning rings stretch and adjust until they settle into position. During this period of a week or more the new kora is played while its strings are retensioned and tuned. Finally the new kora's resonant voice emerges.
